DCs CHALLENGE

INTRODUCING THE DC's CHALLENGE

The DC's Challenge is precisely that. It is a series of challenges that have been planned and organised for me by Pendle Active Support Unit for the Cubs, Scouts and Explorers of both Burnley and Pendle Districts.

Good Luck and enjoy these challenging experiences!

Howard Mitchell

District Commissioner, Burnley and Pendle

THE DC’s CHALLENGE 2012

There are two main parts to the Challenge which are available to Cub, Scouts and Explorers.

1: A series of MONTHLY CHALLENGES which individuals and/or teams can gain points towards an accumulated total in June 2012. The Challenges are relevant to our programme and should be fun! See below for details of the January and February Challenges. Challenges for the following months will appear on the district website.

2: A separate Challenge will be a 2 DAY EXPEDITION on Saturday 30 June 2012 for Scouts and Explorers which will feature a number of incidents and challenges and an overnight camp. There will also be a similar 1 DAY HIKE for Cubs on Sunday 1 July 2012. Full details will be issued later.

The Monthly Challenges must be completed safely and your Leader will be able to advise you about this. Some challenges may include projects or skills that are part of your normal programme and Leaders may give appropriate instructions e.g. the use of Trangia stoves, knots or map reading skills.

Leaders are not part of your team and they can only help if stated in the Challenge Instructions.

It is intended that you plan and complete the tasks yourselves but in some cases you will need the co-operation of others. Some challenges may require materials and there would be no objection to making a Sponsorship deal to obtain these. The type of Sponsorship that means that the Sponsor gets something in return is the best. Usually this is some kind of publicity but it may involve completing a task for them. Please talk to your Leader about your plans before you start.

Deadlines and Entry to the DC’s Challenge

Entry can be at any time. Just fill in the Entry Form when you send in the results of your first challenge.

You will be sent an Acknowledgement and a Reference Code to use on your Challenge Entries. The Deadlines for the January and February Challenges is 29 February 2012. The Deadlines for the following months will be 30 March for March, 30 April for April, 30 May for May and 30 June for June.

The January and February Challenges are shown below. Future Challenges will usually be issued near the start of each month on the District website.

All Challenges will have 10 points included for completing by the above dates. With the exception of the June Challenge, late achievements will still be marked if completed within one month of the deadline. If you wish to improve or repeat the challenge beyond the deadline date, to gain extra publicity for example, please do so but make sure that the initial results have been recorded. Completion means not only completing the task but also making sure that the results are sent to the Challenge Controller by the deadline date.

Administration

How you control this is up to you but you will need to keep a record of all your results, including photo-graphs or videos so that you can show your results to others. You may need this evidence to show that you have completed part of a badge requirement. If you need help with this, please ask your Leader. All challenges will have 10 points included if suitable records have been kept.

What do you get out of it?

You will get the satisfaction of completing a challenge knowing that you have done your best, plus the knowledge that you have shown commitment by doing them all. Everyone who takes part will receive a Certificate and those you achieve a target number of points will be awarded a badge to wear on their uniform for 12 months. There will also be trophies for the best individuals and team entries in each section for the Monthly Challenges.

January Challenge

Design or recommend a 15 minute Fun Challenge!

This should give full details of the equipment needed, the solution and confirmation that you have tested it with an independent person.

60 points are available: 10 for publicity, 10 for records, 10 for punctuality, 10 for originality,

20 for completing the challenge.

February Challenge

Plan, prepare and serve a 2 course meal for guests at your meeting place of other suitable venue.

Cub Scouts can either work as a six or as a pack depending on your venue. All should play some part in the challenge. Your meal can be either hot or cold, that is to say, intentionally cold!

Scouts can either work as a Patrol or as a Troop depending on your venue. All should play some part in the challenge. At least one course should be hot.

Explorers should work as a minimum group of three. At least one course should be hot.

60 points are available: 20 for completing by 30 March, 10 bonus points for completing by 29 February, 10 bonus points for good publicity, 10 points for originality of venue, menu or guests, 10 points for producing a record of the challenge.

Leaders may only help in matters of safety and hygiene. The planning and majority of the work should be done by yourselves.

Why not consider making this a fundraiser?

March Challenge.

This one is about Maps, Naismith's Rule and Walking.

You need to plan a walk giving reference points and, using Naismith's Rule, estimate the time it will take you to do the walk.

Then do the walk recording the actual times taken.

Examine the reasons for any variance.

You may need some instruction to learn how to complete this challenge and that is ok as long as you do the actual work.

Safety rules do apply when out walking, please abide by them.

We expect the distance of the walk to be around 5 miles for cub scouts, 10miles for Scouts and 15 miles for Explorer Scouts.

60 points are available for this. 20 for completing by 30 April, 10 bonus points by completing by 30th March, 10 bonus points for good publicity, 10 points for including a purpose to the walk and 10 points for recording the challenge.

April Challenge

This is a chance for some bonus points ,and no, it's not an April Fool!

Attend your local Scout St George's Day event and gain 20 bonus points towards you total. Make sure your leader registers your attendance.

The regular monthly challenge will give you the possibility to earn 60 points towards your total.

Plan and take part in a mini show.

This can be anything (legal) in the "entertainment" category. Comedy, song and dance, play etc.

This is better done as a team and it is not necessary for all the team to appear "on stage", there are other jobs that need doing to put on a show. Costume, make up, light and sound, front of house, publicity to suggest a few. Of course you still need somebody on stage!

Stage can be interpreted as Campfire.

Points available are 20 for completion by 30th May,

bonus of 10 for completion and receipt of entry by 31st April

                             10 for publicity

                             10 for record of event

                     and   10 for originality
