NEWSLETTER No 78 Issued October 2010

An Invitation to a Development Evening!

All adults, leaders, assistants, members of Executive Committees and Scout Fellowships in Burnley and Pendle Districts are warmly invited to our

DEVELOPMENT EVENING

On Tuesday 2 November 2010

At North Valley Community Centre

Birtwistle Avenue, Colne

1930 to 2100 hrs

The evening will feature:

The formation of an Active Support Unit in Burnley and Pendle

Depending on support, we hope to establish an Active Support Unit to continue the support given by the Scout Fellowships. All adults with a little time to spare are invited to join this unit and occasionally help their fellow leaders at District camps and activities or if they need help in their meeting place. The Fellowships enjoyed an active social diary and it is hoped that this will continue. We need to recruit a Wood Badge holder to lead the unit.

Consolidation of smaller Scout Groups

All Scout Groups need to offer an attractive programme and smaller groups are likely to benefit by being part of a larger unit. Suggestions and recommendations will be welcomed and considered with due sensitivity.

Appointment Reviews

All GSL’s and Leaders-in-charge are required undertake Appointment Reviews with their leaders and assistants. A brief resume of the process will be given.

Safeguarding

As mentioned in my previous Newsletter, Policy, Organisation and Rules introduced a new requirement for adults to have undertaken approved safeguarding training at the point that their review is undertaken.  This will ensure that we can keep people up-to-date on this essential area of work with all adults in Scouting receiving this training at least every five years.

Adult Training Programme – The Wood Badge

All Leaders and assistants are respectfully reminded that they have agreed to complete the obligatory training required for their respective role in Scouting. Some leaders have a number of modules outstanding and further support is now available from Michelle Iddon, our Local Training Manager. (GSL’s and leaders in charge will be sent a list of leaders and their training requirements in advance of this evening. Information is taken from the HQ Member’s Database and may not include all completed modules. If there appears to be a discrepancy, please bring a record of when modules were completed so that records can be corrected.)

East Lancashire County Swimming Gala – Friday 26 November 2010

at Darwen Leisure Centre commencing 1900 hrs

If each District has not formed “section teams” by the Development Evening, it would be very helpful if section leaders could bring details of the approx timings of their fastest swimmers for the events detailed on the Gala programme so that we can make appropriate selections.

Due to the nature of this meeting, please make sure that each Scout Group is represented.

HEADQUARTER’S EVENTS FOR GSL’s  -  FEBRUARY 2011

If you haven’t already booked, don’t miss the special events being held here in Lancashire for GSL’s. Visit scouts.org.uk for further information and booking facilities.

During the autumn of 2010 and the spring of 2011, Headquarters  will be running a series of weekend workshops in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the eight English Regions.
These events will be aimed at providing targeted support and information to Group Scout Leaders, District Commissioners and Supporter roles as well as giving us an opportunity to hear your views on where we should be focusing resources.

Group Scout Leaders and District Commissioners Forums

The purpose of these workshops is twofold – an opportunity to hear from the UK Chief Commissioner on the work to-date on our vision to 2018 and to help shape the future work and support. Offering larger events means that we will provide you with more tailored workshop opportunities, networking potential and a great all round experience.

This is a great opportunity to have your say about how HQ services and the support you get generally should develop over the next few years and is part of our commitment to get better at listening to the movement – so please come and join us.

The Regional date for this event is as follows:

North West, Lancashire - 5 February 2011

Development, Advice and Support Days

The day provides an opportunity to engage with UK headquarters and receive up to date briefings on UK wide developments, an opportunity to look at regional growth and development and share in work that is relevant to the real needs of the movement.

Over the coming months you will be receiving further information sent directly to you about the events relevant to your role.

The Regional date for this event is as follows:

North West, Lancashire – 6 February 2011
