NEWSLETTER No 76 issued June 2010

THANK YOU FOR ACHIEVING THE UNIMAGINABLE DREAM!

Thank you to everyone who attended the County Skills and Chills Leader’s Weekend and rose to the challenge by attempting the seemingly impossible and achieving the unimaginable dream of reaching new heights!! This was an opportunity that should not have been missed. Sadly, some did miss it.

THANK YOU TO THOSE LEADERS WHO “DID THEIR BEST”

On behalf of countless cubs in the County and beyond, thank you to all leaders who did their best to provide them with a huge range of varied activities and challenges on County Cub Adventure Day. They certainly succeeded! With everything under the sun, (yes it was glorious!) from bouncing to cooking, singing to shooting and climbing to rafting, it was an excellent day when everyone, including leaders from other sections, worked together.

PENDLE DISTRICT BSL’s & CSL’s MEETING

The next meeting is on Wednesday 7 July at St Thomas’s at 2030 hrs to discuss the final arrangements for the District Camp. Scout Leaders are welcome too!

DISTRICT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEES

Pendle: Monday 19 July at St Thomas’s at 2000 hrs

Burnley: Thursday 15 July at St Cuthbert’s at 2000 hrs

Pendle traditionally hold their St George’s Day Service on the actual day but in 2011 it will be on Easter Weekend which is preceded by two weeks school holidays so we need to consider either an alternative date or the implications if we stick to the actual date. Burnley usually hold their SGD Service on the nearest Sunday but this may also be impractical.

We need to hear your views NOW so that each Executive Committee can bear them in mind before reaching a decision. Please email me at howie.mitchell@btinternet.com before the next Executive Meeting shown above.

HEADQUARTER’S NEWS

VETTING & BARRING SCHEME

You may have seen the announcement by the Government on 15 June 2010 that the further implementation of the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will not now go ahead as planned. It should however be noted that the requirement for Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosures remain in place. Further information will be published as soon as it is available.

APPOINTMENT REVIEWS – SAFEGUARDING TRAINING ARRANGEMENTS

You may be aware that the January 2010 edition of Policy, Organisation and Rules introduces a new requirement for adults to have undertaken approved safeguarding training at the point that their review is undertaken.  This will ensure that we can keep people up-to-date on this essential area of work – with all adults in Scouting receiving this training at least every five years. This training obligation may be met through two routes:

1. Participation in a training session in the period since the adult’s last appointment review

Two such training sessions have been scheduled this year: 22 June and 22 September, please contact Joanne Carey to reserve a place on either.

2. Participation in the NSPCC Keeping Children Safe online training package, in the period since the individual’s last appointment review.

For further details and registration on Keeping Children Safe please contact Joanne Carey.
